Maker Kids?

The future aims of primary education could be a rich mix of learning by doing, hacking the physical world and taking direct control of the technologies around us.

Kids could use this knowledge to be more connected to each other and the wider world.

TEDxKids Brussels 2011 wants to give kids the tools to directly influence the physical and social ecosphere in the hope that this creates freedom and empowerment for the future.

Watch the full list of speakers, makers, tinkerers, child therapist and others here

The event will be livestream here

"We need to evolve a new appreciation of the importance of nurturing human talent along with an understanding of how talent expresses itself differently in every individual. We need to create environments - in our schools (...) where evert kid is inspired to grow creatively.

Finding our passion changes everything!"

Earth Day 2011: a story about the Forest

Forests provide the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat.  Forests also provide us with the wood and paper products we use every day.

Listen Franke James, author and artist in a creative personal story for FSC Canada on the video below

Who cares about the Forest? from Franke James on Vimeo.

A lovely story about the forests isn'it? Franke is the author of Bothered By My Green Conscience which merges science, art and storytelling to inspire people to take action and “do the hardest thing first” for the planet.

So, let's continue to inspire our students for Earth Day 2011

Education:

  • Display the video in the classroom (primary and elementary school)
  • Let your students use iPad or smartphone to read 'Who cares about the Forest' as a visual essay here
  • Students are invited to a storytelling about Earth and some visual essays to complete their story.
  • Students can visit Franke James' website (edutators tutoring) and leave a comment to the author.

I will be back with another act of green in the school

L'imagination extraordinaire...

The Fifth Element

Creativity expert Sir Ken Robinson challenges us all the time to educate our students cultivating creativity and and acknowledge multiple types of intelligence.

We have listen him on private schools and public schools theme here.

His last book The Element (you can look inside) has a new Spanish animation version. Just look the video below!

Education:

How interesting it would be showing the video to your students as a motivation for one of your lessons?

As educators, we do realize how our students are creative in many ways. We can develop the creativity of young people as a competency in the acquisition of knowledge moving beyond the system of some tradtional schools.

Gorillaz on iPad

If you're a fan of the Gorillaz, led by the English musician Damon Albarn, don't forget to check online for an additional  present this Christmas.
The band has always been known for seeking out ways to set themselves apart– which leads us to the digital Christmas gift of the album The Fall, now available to listen to online on the band's site.
And by the way, it was composed using mostly an iPad, with just a few other instruments.
"I've made it on an iPad – I hope I'll be making the first record on aniPad," he said. "I fell in love with myiPad as soon as I got it, so I've made a completely different kind of record."
Damon Albarn

On Christmas Eve the Gorillaz gave the 15-song album away to members of its Sub-Division fan club.
For those who aren't paid club members, the record can be heard by-way-of streaming online and the band has promised to bring it to record stores early next year.
A few traditional instruments were used too, each of which were recorded solely by an iPad, incuding a guitar, Melodica, Microkorg, Moog Voyager, Korg Monotron, Korg Vocoder, Omnichord, piano and ukulele.
Albarn, who created the Gorillaz with comic book artist Jamie Hewlett, is the only member of the band to have appeared on each of the group's albums. Other band members change frequently depending on the album or live concert.

Voici 'Phoner to Arizona'

Well, Damon Albarn felt in love with his iPad! Who does not?! People love iPad! Not only the musicians... educators and students too.

Enjoy your holiday time!

Sensewall at Coimbra University campus

Sensewall University of Coimbra/ Portugal

This is the latest multi-touch installation by SenseBloom. It’s located in the campus bar, free access, at the Computer Science Department of Coimbra University, Portugal.

SenseWall is unique in Portugal. It is a Laser Light Plane (LLP) multi-touch wall with a display area of 2.8m x 1.05m.

Created with the intent of letting students and the research community explore new concepts in HCI by designing and creating applications for course projects or just for fun.

SenseWall from Tiago Serra on Vimeo.

"We called it SenseWall because we wanted to create a platform that would have more senses than solely touch. So we added 2 cameras above the display for computer vision applications, a microphone for sound input, speakers for sound output and an RFID reader."

The project has been developed for three years by three students coordinated by Prof. Mario Zenha.
Some results: TOUCHBLOOM – a “multi touch” transportable, created for Microsoft Portugal that used it on Windows 7 demonstration, and PUDDLE OF LIFE, an interactive game that it is at the Science Museum of Universidade de Coimbra.

Puddle of Life - Darwin Exhibit from Tiago Serra on Vimeo.

"Puddle of Life" is an educational multi-touch installation that was designed for Coimbra's Science Museum (Darwin exhibit), demonstrating the theory of natural selection, as part of Darwin's 200th anniversary.

The installation is composed of a round multi-touch table whose surface represents a virtual environment where 4 species of creatures live in. Each of these little creatures have different physical characteristics visually expressed by it's quantity and/or size: Vision, Locomotion and Fur. Read more

"We believe highly motivated people can produce better work and be happier at the same time. By making workflows simpler and technology easier to use we hope to increase productivity and enable everyone to achieve their goals in a more pleasant and fruitful way. This is the foundation that supports every new product idea we have."

Arcade Fire, funny & pedagogical

Well, talking about music and pedagogy, why not share with you an interesting project! Music and Google maps!

So, let's talk about! Arcade Fire! Do you know this group of music don't you?! Here, the last project of "Arcade Fire", very innovative, using the latest Technologies.

So,  Google joined this canadian group Arcade Fire to conceptualize an interactive video that shows some of the potentialities of the new "markup" language.

The Wilderness Downtown choreographed windows, interactive flocking, custom rendered maps, real-time compositing, procedural drawing, 3D canvas rendering... this Chrome Experiment has them all.

"The Wilderness Downtown" is an interactive interpretation of Arcade Fire's song "We Used To Wait" and was built entirely with the latest open web technologies, including HTML5 video, audio, and canvas.

"The Wilderness Downtown" an interactive film by Chris Milk, is part of the new album of Arcade Fire.

It demands our interaction using Google Maps and Street View to include these resources in the video images from the town where we are or live!

Google Maps API for fetching dynamic routes to destination and checking Street View content at points along the route.

On the  website, you must enter the address of the town where you grew up and it's so amazing!!

I did the experience and it is fantastic! I just loved it!

Listening the song that goes on in our city, following several browser windows 3D that open and close at the music rythm. At the end of the interactive video, an ecological message! Trees for everywhere! Wow! It's amazing!

Street detection for animated trees composited dynamically in place over Street View.

A postcard is created by an analog signal: you! This site takes that postcard and converts it to digital. The Wilderness Machine brings it back to analog. Look for it on tour with the band in North America. If you're lucky enough to get someone's postcard from it, plant it. A tree will grow out of it.

What a wonderful tool to geo-studies in classroom with your students! They will be so surprised! Don't forget! Let them do this geo-study on their smartphones !

Ready to start?
