Pottermore countdown clock is revealed on YouTube

"Harry Potter fans have been sent into a frenzy of excitement after the creator of their favourite wizard, JK Rowling, launched a mysterious new website"

The Guardian | Books

The project was unveiled when Rowling set fans some clues yesterday, June 16, asking them to enter 10 sets of coordinates into a site called secretstreetview.com. A letter could be found at each location, spelling out the Pottermore name.
The website, Pottermore.com shows the word 'Pottermore' on a pink background, with a message 'coming soon...' and Rowling's famous signature.
A Twitter account, @Pottermore, has also been set up on June 16 too and already has almost 44,000 followers.
Some readers are praying that the news might be a new Potter book, although Rowling has previously said it is "highly unlikely" that she would write more Harry Potter novels.
"I've got enough story for seven books and I never planned to carry the story beyond the end of book seven. I might do an eighth book for charity, a kind of encyclopedia of the world so that I could use all the extra material that's not in the books ... we'll see!"
J.K.Rowling
However, she did tell Oprah Winfrey in an interview last year that she could "definitely write an eighth, ninth [and] 10th book", adding "I think I am done but you never know".
It is rumoured that the interactive site will be a meeting place for fans offering games, a Harry Potter encyclopaedia, readings by Stephen Fry and competitions. Fans will also be able to buy the books.

The future aims of primary education could be a rich mix of learning by doing, hacking the physical world and taking direct control of the technologies around us.

Kids could use this knowledge to be more connected to each other and the wider world.

TEDxKids Brussels 2011 wants to give kids the tools to directly influence the physical and social ecosphere in the hope that this creates freedom and empowerment for the future.

Watch the full list of speakers, makers, tinkerers, child therapist and others here

"We need to evolve a new appreciation of the importance of nurturing human talent along with an understanding of how talent expresses itself differently in every individual. We need to create environments - in our schools (...) where evert kid is inspired to grow creatively.

Finding our passion changes everything!"

Gotta Share! The importance of creativity

A musical breaks out at the GEL Conference in New York, last April. A speaker is suddenly interrupted by a man who refuses to turn off his cell phone. This is the fourth in our series of Spontaneous Musical projects.

Mark Hurst

"I’ve been involved with the Gel Conference since speaking there in 2005. Gel is an annual conference exploring good experience in all its forms – in art, business, technology, society, and life. There are always fabulous speakers, and it’s always a great time. This year, I asked founder Mark Hurst if he’d be open to Improv Everywhere staging a surprise musical at Gel. He immediately agreed."

Education:

Watch the making off here. It's fun and very interesting.

Are you a creative educator? Do you have creative students?

So, why not a making off of some innovative ideas in a cross-curricula in your school?

Do it! Your students will love taking part at a different way to present some thematic subjects.

"Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, you will what you imagine and at last you create what you will."

Using VTS in Education

Dessin Gerard Mathieu

In our days, creativity and innovation are fundamental aims to captivate students in the classroom. Sometimes curricula are not very attractive! But educators can change it.

Have you read Sunni Brown's "Game Storming Book"?  Watched her at the TED conference?

Thought doodling was a waste of time? It's not, for an example of useful doodling watch the video by Allison Crow below.

You have to admit! It's much more interesting than another yawner of a PowerPoint Presentation.

Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) is a research-based teaching method that improves critical thinking and language skills through discussions of visual images.

I can share with you the increadible work on visual thinking at Lisbon EFQUEL Innovation Forum, September 2010. It encouraged a lot the dialogue between all participants. And we could follow the disussions of all the workshops through the different graphic panels.
The team of graphic facilitation students of the United Nations University, Vice-Rectorat in Europe (UNU-ViE) did an impressive and fantastic panel in visual thinking about all the sessions during three days and encourage a lot the discussion between all the participants.

VTS Facilitation in Education:

Visual Thinking Strategies uses art to foster students' capacities to observe, think, listen and communicate.

In VTS discussions teachers support student growth by facilitating discussions of carefully selected works of visual art.

For example watch A VTS Discussion with Fourth Grade Students on the video below

A VTS Discussion with Fourth Grade Students from Visual Thinking Strategies on Vimeo.

VTS encourages participation, especially among students and educators. VTS is easy to learn and offers a proven strategy for educators to meet current learning objectives as you could watch on the video.

You can watch other videos with different grades here. And learn more about VTS here.

Educators an find some strategies and techniques here

"One of our most exciting partnerships is built around the Visual Thinking Strategies, an innovative arts based curriculum that offers great promise for education." (...)

Hip Hop Genius: Remixing High School Education

Hip Hop Genius: Remixing High School Education from sam seidel on Vimeo.

The video illustrates literally the concept of "Hip Hop Genius". These ideas are explored more fully in the book, "Hip Hop Genius: Remixing High School Education"  by Sam Seidel (hiphopgenius.org)

Education:

There is a great analogy between creativity of hip hop and the need to 'remix' education.

The message on this video is about changing education to maximize learners potencial and to respect them not as 'consummers' but as 'creators'.

The educators' new 'attitude' doesn't mean change the important or some good aspects of improving skills learning.

It means to motivate learners that speak a different language, opening the door of the classsroms to build new understanding plataforms between school and young people's interests and ingenuity.

Students are brilliant creators if educators can reach their confidence.

"The best resources teachers can take into the classroom are their own minds."

Steve Wheeler

If we have a creative and open mind, as educators, we can feel students' brilliance and genius.

Notes:
The drawings were done by Mike McCarthy, a student at College Unbound, a school that exemplifies many of the values espoused in the film.

The entire video was shot in College Unbound's seminar space, where Mike has built a studio for his company Drawn Along.

The end sequence was shot by Graham Wheeler, a recent graduate of the East Bay Met, a high school that also embodies many of the principles of Hip Hop Genius. Graham and Mike edited the whole video as well.

The beat at the end was made by DJ Tek, who worked with me at the AS220 Broad Street Studio.

Earth Day 2011: a story about the Forest

Forests provide the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat.  Forests also provide us with the wood and paper products we use every day.

Listen Franke James, author and artist in a creative personal story for FSC Canada on the video below

Who cares about the Forest? from Franke James on Vimeo.

A lovely story about the forests isn'it? Franke is the author of Bothered By My Green Conscience which merges science, art and storytelling to inspire people to take action and “do the hardest thing first” for the planet.

So, let's continue to inspire our students for Earth Day 2011

Education:

  • Display the video in the classroom (primary and elementary school)
  • Let your students use iPad or smartphone to read 'Who cares about the Forest' as a visual essay here
  • Students are invited to a storytelling about Earth and some visual essays to complete their story.
  • Students can visit Franke James' website (edutators tutoring) and leave a comment to the author.

I will be back with another act of green in the school

El Elemento

Creativity expert Sir Ken Robinson challenges us all the time to educate our students cultivating creativity and and acknowledge multiple types of intelligence.

We have listen him on private schools and public schools theme here.

His last book The Element (you can look inside) has a new Spanish animation version. Just look the video below!

Education:

How interesting it would be showing the video to your students as a motivation for one of your lessons?

As educators, we do realize how our students are creative in many ways. We can develop the creativity of young people as a competency in the acquisition of knowledge moving beyond the system of some tradtional schools.
