Linux - 20 years

Infographic - Linux 20 years

Linux is celebrating its 20th anniversary. To commemorate, the Linux Foundation created an infographic that highlights events in the past 20-years from the open-source movement.

Watch the video below from Linux Foundation remembering the history of 20 years.

"Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Linux with us. Watch the Story of Linux to remember - or learn for the first time - how Linux has disrupted a market and has begun to change the world. Join in a variety of activities planned this year to mark this important milestone."

The Linux Foundation is conducting a video contest. This year's contest will commemorate the 20th anniversary of Linux as a free software.

"This year’s contest will commemorate the 20th anniversary of Linux by seeking the best user-generated videos that celebrate Linux while demonstrating the impact of the operating system on computing, business and/or culture over the last 20 years and today."

Video submissions must be received by 12:01 a.m. PDT on Saturday, July 2 2011. To increase your odds of winning and to submit your video, please visit The Linux Foundation’s video website for guidance on video submissions and the contest rules.

Linux is the best example of how open-source has attracted a worldwide developer community.

Mobile Apps for the Disabled

The interaction between the user and software is done via brainwaves and for this to happen the user needs the NeuroSky Mindset which reads the user’s brainwaves, uses an analog-to-digital converter and sends the digitalized information via Bluetooth to the phone. The byte sequence, called packet, sent by the headset is then translated into the user’s level of meditation and attention by using an algorithm provided by the headset’s company. Once all of this is done, the signal is passed on to the ThinkContacts app via bluetooth and it places the call.
To get an idea of how it works, I recommend that you check out the following video:

ThinkContacts is a new mobile application being developed by Nokia which would allow a disabled person to select a contact from a list and place a phone call to that person using only their mind. The app, which is designed for Nokia's N900 Maemo platform, works with an accompanying headset that reads the user's brainwaves to measure attention levels. If the attention level is higher than 70%, the software scrolls to the next contact in the list. If the attention level is higher than 80%, the software makes a phone call to the selected contact.

It's one of the latest developments in making accessible smartphone applications for the disabled, the blind and deaf.Read more

Exit Camp for Girls in Portugal

During five days ending on 6 July 2010 Exit Camp promoted by IBM in Portugal joined 30 young girls 11-13 years old, among daughters of IBM employees and students from a public school. This year Escola Eugénio dos Santos, Lisbon, ensured the participation of 16 young girls.

Among the activities proposed in the EXIT Camp there was the programming of robots where the young Portuguese girls showed their talent against the British team that were participating in an equivalent program that runned on IBM in the UK.

The video made by Tek explains (Portuguese language) the initiative and its impact. The victory of the Portuguese robots against the British team is a very interesting point.

The aim is to promote Technology among young girls to increase gender equality in their future career.

Equality between women and men is a fundamental right, a common value of the EU, and a necessary condition for the achievement of the EU objectives of growth, employment and social cohesion.

This week will be continued during the school time by an IBM web tool directly linked to the school.

MEDEA Awards 2009

Recognising, encouraging and rewarding
excellence and creativity in media in education

I was honoured to being a judge at MEDEA Awards 2009, invited by Nikos Cortoos.

As a teacher-assessor specialized by the University of Evora and UCP/Biotechnology), I commited myself thorough a careful work of analysis in all the areas of the projects evaluation. Long hours, testing, verifying, checking the several aspects of the evaluation  process.

It is an expertise work that we give unambiguous, with consistency, independence and extreme relief.

The finalists were chosen by a jury made up of 76 education and media experts from 26 countries who assessed the MEDEA entries in October.

The 8 finalists of "MEDEA Awards 2009" had been announced by MEDEA Secretariat, on 9th November 2009. You can see the list here

The MEDEA Awards 2009 included two new MEDEA Awards: the MEDEA Award for Creativity and Innovation and the European Collaboration Award.

The 8 winners and the 2 winners of the additional awards will be announced during the MEDEA Awards Ceremony on 4 December 2009, in Berlin.

Unfortunally, I can't accept the invitation to participate in the cerimony because I have another commitment at the same time.

Congratulations to all the winners!
