Sunday time: The Gift

http://www.thegift.pt

On Thursday night, June 9, 2011, we went to Casa da Musica to listen, during the event Clubbing, the Portuguese band The Gift perfoming the new album Explode

Lobby Casa da Musica | Porto (Portugal)

The Gift is one of most succeed bandwell known in Portugal and other countries as Spain, Canada (Toronto) and United States (New York).

For 17 years, without management or outside labels, they’ve grown famous in their home country and Spain by recording in their converted garage.

"Arguably, they’ve built a small empire around high-drama, English-language anthemic indie rock by garnering sponsorships, opening for the likes of Flaming Lips in the US, and becoming the “first Portuguese band to X” - X being everything (like getting a spot on MTV UK)".

The Guilhermina Suggia hall was complete! A lot of people on stairs just applauding, singing and dancing on every theme of Explode and some 'classical'  songs of the band as several 'encore'. The band hit the stage!

Frontwoman Sonia Tavares, a true diva who had crooned and high-kicked through a demanding hours-long set: “Do you want more? Dance and sing to us because we’re going to play until going directly to Toronto fly…”

The audience wedeeply applauded the talent of the band and this album, very explosive! Sounds, colours, talent!

Positive thinking and bright colors are The Gift’s hallmarks, right down to the pastel keyboards.

For Explodethey based their album art around a trip to the Holi festival in rural India, where they were doused from head to toe.

“We always wanted this album to be an explosion of color, of joy, of happiness, and positivity,” John said. “It was the perfect location… we were there a week celebrating the festival with a local photographer in the temples, throwing the traditional colored powder at each other. All the while we understood that all of the people around us were so happy with so little.”
Nuno Gonçalves (keyboards & voice)
Explode which hit number 1 in Portugal album sales. Here the playlist.

An amazing night of indie rock, a lots of colour, joy and dancing where the seats were no barrier!

"If you love pretty colors, you'll love Portuguese music mainstay The Gift, an anthemic indie rock band that's been DIY for 17 years."

Philip Glass at Casa da Musica

On Wednesday night, May 25, 2011, I went to Casa da Musica to listen the American pianist Philip Glass to play 30 years of his music. He is one of most famous composers of the 20th century.

He studied with Ravi Shankar, the greatest Indian musician of the 20th century
Soundtracks like "The Hours", "The Illusionist", and others are in our best memories.

The Guilhermina Suggia hall was complete. Even the space chorus was open and all the seats occupied.

Five themes and two encore from about 30 years was perfomed during 90 minutes without any interruption.  In an very intimate concert.

Glass played Six Études (1994-1999), Mad Rush (1980), Metamorphoses (1989), Dreaming Awake (2006), Wichita Vortex Sutra (1990). He came back on the stage and offered two encore.

The audience wedeeply applauded his talent! The contemporary minimalist composer was grateful. And we were deeply touched by his art! And his simplicity!

Ryuichi Sakamoto & Alva Noto
Casa da Musica, Porto

In July 11, 2006 Ryuichi Sakamoto & Alva Noto perfomed at Casa da Musica to play Insen Project.

I was there! The profund synergy between the acoustic and the electronic  created music sounds and imagetic that each of us explored with fascination in an intimate flow.

Ryuchi Sakamoto & Alva Noto are releasing their fifth collaboration May 9th, followed by a European tour.

The new album will host its world live premiere on May 12th, 2011 at the Roundhouse in London, Uk.

I really hope that they could include Casa da Musica again.

"I want to break down the walls between genres, categories or cultures."

Melody Gardot in a sunday afternoon

Melody Gardot/ Casa da Música
Phtography: Paulo Costa

"Her sultry voice has made Melody Gardot an international sensation. Her latest album, "My One and Only Thrill," has dazzled critics in the U.S., and sold more than half a million copies in Europe."

Melody Gardot performed at Casa da Musica, July 06.2010. She presented the second album, My One and Only (2009).

Melody Gardot, singer, songwriter, piano player and guitar player is one  of jazz singers leading lights, at the moment with her melodious voice. She mix blues and 'chanson', surrounded by four good musicians who supported incredibly the quality of the themes and the physical conditions of Melody Gardot.

A good instrumental introduction in jazz music: the cello! I would say that it is almost a concept of innovation in jazz! Rarely I hear a cello in jazz concertsTo me, the most creative musician on stage that night.

There’s something to watch her singing! The audience were convinced that this Philadelphian singer happens to be one of the world's greatest jazz singer-songwriters. Wedeeply applauded her talent! And her musicians!

"Jazz sensation Melody Gardot’s grief-stricken, yet inspirational, journey to stardom is captured in Melody Gardot: The Accidental Musician."

Mario Laginha, a jazz tribute to Chopin

Mario Laginha/ Jazz musician (Portugal)

On Friday night, March 4, 2011, i went to Casa da Musica to listen Mario Laginha Trio presenting  the new album named 'Mongrel Chopin'.

Mario Laginha admits that the way he has been inspired and transformed the music of Polish composer is an 'heresy' that 'exudes respect' for Chopin.

Eight themes of Chopin inspired Mario Laginha in the creation o 'Mongrel Chopin' between 'Study op.10 nr11', 'Ballad op.23',  Waltz op.34 nr2 or Scherzo op.31 nr2.

Mongrel Chopin/ Mario Laginha Trio

It's true! The pieces played exuded completely an intimate and deep respect for  Frédéric Chopin. Only a 'connaisseur' of classical music could transform with such a gifted talent the music of Chopin.

Mario Laginha did classical studies in the Conservatorio de Musica of Lisbon with the highest honours.

Mario Laginha, classical composer, but most of all jazz composer, is a fantastic pianist, and he is one of jazz music’s leading lights, at the moment in Portugal.  He has been distinguished with several awards for his talented work.

Piano masterpieces of Fryderyk Chopin, reinvented by Mario Laginha are included on his new album 'Mongrel Chopin' (ONC, Produções Culturais, 2010) a project commissioned by the Metropolitana and Sao Luis Theater (Lisbon) to participate in the tribute of the '200th Anniversary of Chopin's Birthday', during the Chopin Year Celebration (2010)

He started the performance with 'Nocturne op.48 nr.1' in which he built a wonderful melody at the piano sorrounded smoothly by the drums and bass.

Alexandre Frazão (drums)

With Mario Laginha on piano, Bernardo Moreira on double bass and Alexandre Frazão on drums, two well known and good musicians.

Bernardo Moreira (double bass)

There’s something magical to watching Mario Laginha play the piano! He is an amazing player on this beautiful instrument. His 'touch' ranging from a silky smooth melody to a intimate that remember me so much Chopin masterpieces. He is a gifted musician and owner of an increadible sensibility. At the same time is so humble. Like a great heart!

The audience was so touched, that coudn't interrupt with applause, as it is usual in the jazz concerts. The spirit of Chopin was there!

Mario Laginha said that he left space for improvisation looking to approximate the music of Chopin 'of his musical universe'.

'Improvisation was also mark of Chopin', said Laginha and he classified Fryderich Chopin as 'one of the greatest improvisers of all time.'

Mario Laginha Trio/ Cine Teatro Loulé

Mario Laginha Trio played 'Fado' in the midle of the concert and 'Nocturne op.48 nr1 as an encore.

This was a performance in which an encore was needed as relief of Mario Laginha trio talent and sympathy.

It happens to be one of the Portuguese's greatest young jazz musician. The audience deeply applauded his talent! And his two other musicians!

The Mongrel Chopin of Mario Laginha Trio, last edited on November 22, 2010 was recently awarded "Best Album of the Year" by the 'Portuguese Society of Authors'.

You can listen the Fantasia op.49 on Facebook of Casa da Musica.

Mario Laginha and his trio brought at Casa da Musica Chopin's soul and some of his legendary piano masterpieces that they play poetically.

"How hard it is to 'fully' grasp the cosmos of this music! The entire Poland is here: her national drama, her everyday life, her feelings, the cult of beauty in a human being and the humanity, the noble and proud character of the country, her ponderings and songs."

«Tomei muitas liberdades. Mudei compassos, tempos, modifiquei algumas harmonias, até mesmo melodias»

Joanna Newsom, whimsically poetic!

On Monday night, January 24th 2011 at Casa da Musica, Joanna Newsom played all of her new album Have one on Me, surrounded by five good musicians who replicated those arrangements with a folkier sound: accordion guitar, banjo and bouzouki instead of violins, violas, cellos and woodwinds.

Joanna Newsom, singer, songwriter and harpist is one of indie music’s leading lights, at the moment.  She defies easy categorisation...

She started her performance with “The Book of Right-On,” in which she built a powerfully percussive, syncopated vamp all by herself.

There’s something to watching her play the harp! She is an amazing player on this beautiful instrument. Her voice often discribed as childlike. Her voice ranging from a silky smooth tone to a cry of anguish remember me the wonderful songwriter Kate Bush.

She brought the medieval sound of Europe and some folk legends that she sings and plays poetically.

The audience were convinced that this californian young harp virtuoso happens to be one of the world's greatest young singer-songwriters. We deeply applauded her talent! And her musicians!

She played 'On a Good Day' and 'Baby Birch' , as an encore. This was a show in which an encore was needed as relief of her talent and sympathy.

Here Joanna Newsom playing live at Jools Holland show

"Since Ms. Newsom released her debut album, “The Milk-Eyed Mender,” in 2004, her music has been labeled indie-rock, singer-songwriter ballads and freak-folk. None of those categories is an exact fit for songs that are simultaneously private whimsies and grand parables, delicate and steely, childlike and sage."
